FOREWORD

Over the last hundred years, McKinsey & Company has grown to become one of the world’s most influential consulting firms, providing strategic advice to leading organizations across the globe. With a commitment to delivering high-impact solutions, McKinsey has long maintained a reputation for excellence in helping companies navigate complex challenges and capitalize on opportunities.

The firm was established in 1926 by James O. McKinsey to provide accounting and budgeting services, together with advice on management issues based on rigorous analysis. Over the first decade, McKinsey expanded its reach from its Chicago roots, pioneering an ethos of independence and professionalism that still underpins the firm today. Key milestones in its early history include the opening of its first international office, in London, in 1959, and the development of its renowned McKinsey 7-S framework in the late 1970s, which revolutionized organizational management.
Today, McKinsey has a network of offices spanning more than 130 cities in over 65 countries. The firm’s global reach is matched by its diverse expertise, encompassing sectors ranging from technology and finance to healthcare and government. McKinsey continues to push the boundaries of management consulting, leading in emerging sectors such as big data, analytics and AI through a series of strategic acquisitions and growth initiatives. Its forward-thinking approach has solidified its role as a key player in the modern business world, helping clients to ‘innovate more sustainably, achieve lasting gains in performance, and build workforces that will thrive for this generation and the next.’
This independently produced commemorative publication celebrates 100 years of McKinsey & Company by providing an impartial and objective overview of its achievements and future plans as it continues to drive transformational change in businesses worldwide.

Chapter One

Founding Vision

The eponymous founder of the firm, James O. McKinsey, was born in 1889 in the Ozarks region in the south-central US.

A professor of accounting, McKinsey wrote several influential books on management accounting and business budgeting, pioneering the ‘scientific management’ approach.

In 1926, in Chicago, he launched James O. McKinsey and Company, Management Accountants and Engineers, advising businesses on how to use accounting principles as a management tool.

This business operated according to what became known as the ‘McKinsey Way’ – a structured approach to problem-solving that prioritized thorough research, analysis and impartial decision-making.

In 1950, Marvin Bower became the firm’s managing director. He was a strong advocate for the consultant’s ‘obligation to dissent,’ ensuring the company maintained a culture of critical thinking.
